Tele2 and Telenor now activate 5G across the entire mobile network – covering 90% of Sweden’s landmass and 99.9% of the population
The mobile network has been upgraded with new technology, more masts, and greater capacity. The activation means that 5G achieves much better reach and performance, especially in challenging terrain, indoors, and in sparsely populated areas. With today’s activation, 5G coverage now matches 4G coverage, which means the entire network in Sweden, from mountains to archipelago, is included. At the same time, the entire network is strengthened with better redundancy and more reliable connectivity.
“Going from 25 to 90 percent land coverage in one step is a huge change. It means that 5G is now available across our entire network in Sweden, from the mountains to archipelago, providing our customers with more reliable and accessible connectivity no matter where they are. At the same time, we are laying the foundation for new services and solutions that can be developed on a robust and future-proof network,” says Elin Ovéus, Head of Networks at Tele2.
“Our mission is to build the network of the future that works where life happens, no matter where you live. Being able to offer 5G in places that have previously been hard to reach – in forests, mountains, basements, and rural areas – is an important step in creating a network for the future. We can now provide 5G coverage that reaches the most people and covers the largest area, for people all across the country,” says Sara Kebert, Network Expert at Telenor Sweden.
Facts: What does this mean in practice?
- The activation has taken place on 700 MHz, a low-frequency band with long reach that works excellently in forests and mountain areas, in the archipelago, as well as for indoor coverage in urban environments.
- The activation is part of the network modernisation in which Tele2 and Telenor are building more coverage and capacity throughout Sweden – along roads, railways, smaller towns, and cities. In many places, 4G and 5G replace the 2G and 3G networks that will be shut down at the end of the year.
- For customers, the improvement happens automatically, and the network is now ready for the development of future 5G services.
- Net4Mobility’s combination of 700 MHz base coverage and 3500 MHz high-capacity coverage in many urban areas provides Tele2’s and Telenor’s customers with an excellent 5G experience.
