Tele2’s Digital Solutions have potentially avoided over 1 Million Tonnes of CO₂e Emissions in 2024
Tele2 has carried out an in-depth analysis of how its products and services contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. This analysis draws on the methodology from “The Enablement Effect”, a landmark report by GSMA and the Carbon Trust (2019), which outlines how digital technologies can drive emission reductions across key sectors.
Using both general industry data and specific insights from Tele2’s operations, we evaluated the annual avoided emissions (measured in CO₂ equivalent) and energy savings resulting from the use of our services. These findings help us understand how our technology contributes to the global effort to limit warming to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Key Findings: Avoided Emissions Exceed Tele2’s Own Carbon Footprint by Over Fourfold
In 2024, Tele2-enabled solutions helped our customers avoid approximately 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂e, an amount that exceeds our own Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by more than 430%. This highlights the transformational role digital connectivity plays in enabling climate-positive action.
The largest share of these avoided emissions, around 78%, comes from:
- Improved driver behaviour through smart fleet management
- The ability to work from home
- Increased use of video calling to stay connected with friends and family
- Smart logistics and efficient routing solutions
How Tele2’s Products and Services Enable Emission Reductions
Our analysis identified a number of key technologies that contribute to carbon avoidance, including:
Smart Buildings
- Energy management systems (electricity and gas, commercial use)
- HVAC control for commercial buildings
- Smart electricity meters (residential)
Smart Working, Living and Health
- Audio conferencing
- Video calling
- Remote working
- Smart home solutions
- Participation in the sharing economy
Smart Transport and Cities
- Smart logistics and routing
- Fleet driver behaviour improvements
Smart Energy
